The SSF Guidelines: Introduction
This short, animated video by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations illustrates the story behind the co-creation of the SSF Guidelines. Share this video with your participants in CL 1 to spark critical conversations about their community's similarities, differences, and way forward.
Small in Scale, Big in Value
United Nations proclaimed 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). IYAFA 2022 served as an opportunity to celebrate the diversity of small-scale artisanal fisheries and aquaculture, including women and youth; to share the current and potential contributions to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and highlight related innovation; and to build and strengthen related support and partnerships at all levels.
About the SSF Guidelines
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations describes the SSF Guidelines from their beginning to implementation. While slightly complex, the step-by-step visuals help to explain the policy instrument's inner workings. The SSF Guidelines represent a global consensus on principles and guidance for small-scale fisheries governance and development. They were made through a participatory process by the people for the people.
No Hidden Catch
In under 90 seconds, this animation by the International Institute for the Environment and Development (IIED) explains how if information on small-scale fisheries was made available – for example how many women and men the sector employs or how much fish they catch and process – people in policy would see more clearly the benefits of investment in the sector. This might include services such as refrigeration, processing facilities and roads that improve market access.
Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication
The FAO's Small-Scale Fisheries Guidelines (SSF Guidelines) is the first global policy instrument that acknowledges small-scale fisheries' importance and provides a roadmap for securing sustainable fisheries encompassing all activities along the value chain and promoting fishing communities' livelihoods, food security, and overall well-being.
The SSF Guidelines - At a Glance
FAO summarizes the SSF Guidelines as an important guidance tool to address the sector's needs and support rightsholders and stakeholders to secure sustainable small-scale fisheries collaboratively. Review this document by chapter for shorter descriptions and concise summaries of key takeaways.
The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture (SOFIA) 2022
Published every two years, SOFIA is the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Division's central report that analyses the status of global stocks and trends, serving as a critical reference for governments, policymakers, academics, civil society, and all actors working in the fisheries and aquaculture sector.
Illuminating Hidden Harvests
This brief by Duke University, FAO, and WorldFish provides an update on the status of the study and shares emerging insights on the need for better data collection and analysis and additional monitoring capabilities to improve our collective understanding of SSF. This is critical to increasing government attention and improving policy responses.
Expeditionary Learning Core Practices: A Vision for Improving Schools
This book on Expeditionary Learning by Outward Bound reviews the central principles, objectives, and approaches to this kind of learning by experience. The publication guides educators in mapping learners' skills, incorporating fieldwork into practice, selecting case studies, and more.
Arts-Based Methods for Transformative Engagement
This toolkit by SUSPLACE Sustainable Place Shaping provides a wide range of creative approaches for engaging young learners in exploring their built and natural environments. Sustainable place-shaping is framed within a relational approach to place, focused on a learner's relationship with their surroundings.
WorldFish
WorldFish is a leading nonprofit research and innovation institution focused on aquatic foods for food system transformation for healthy people and the planet. WorldFish breaks down the need for research in small-scale fisheries and provides further information about the SSF Guidelines.
The Common Worlds Research Collective
The Common Worlds Research Collective is an interdisciplinary network of researchers concerned with our relations with the more-than-human (non-human) world. The Collective provides a critical multidisciplinary space across the fields of early childhood education, children’s and more-than-human geographies, environmental education, feminisms, and Indigenous and environmental humanities.
